How many of you would buy Japanese DVDs of the Pokemon series if they were availiable :

autor: luc129 | date: 2008-11-08 | category: Anime

I would if I had the money. One of the most frustrating things being in this fandom is that the only way to get episodes of Pokemon is either buying the lesser quaility English versions or download the Japanese versions, a less than legal way. I just wish that Nintendo and/or whoever is in charge of distributing the Japanese versions will start releasing them soon. (Please don't say that there are episodes on the Pikachu shorts DVDs, because that only accounts for six to seven episodes out of 500+ episodes) On a separate note: Would anyone know if an American can rent DVDs of the show? I heard that the episodes were availiable for rent. I know it sounds crazy, but I thought I should try.

Answers:

I'd buy Japanese DVDs with english subtitles for the whole series, sure.

I would most definitely buy Japanese DVDs with English subtitles.
autor: oldaw

I would!
autor: pysle333

I would buy them.
autor: iro12

I most certainly would. In the meantime, I'm having to make do with what little they actually *have* released in Japan. It does seem odd that Japan doesn't give this series a proper release, though. I mean, do they *really* think the sales will be so low that it's not worth the trouble?
autor: fiflong1

I'd sure as heck! But only if it was A Pokemon DP boxset. I missed a lot of DP episodes due to me having to conserve harddrive space so I'd pay money to own Shinji's episodes.
autor: fifok

Yes! I REQUIRE MY SATOSHI! (I mostly only watch the dub, but from what I've seen of the raw, I like Satoshi better then Ash)
autor: tomeklin

even if it didn't have subtitles, i'd snag myself some copies. ^^ Japan's dub of the show is amazing, and whenever i see it on youtube i enjoy the show even more than usual, even if i don't understand about...4/5 of the words? yeah, that's a safe bet... but yeah, you know what would be awesome? some of the OLDER seasons in original Japanese w/ subtitles. i'd like that. ^^
autor: maximus54

"Japan's dub of the show"? o.O Anyway, I'd love to buy Japanese Pokemon DVD's, but aren't Japanese DVD's in general kinda expensive?
autor: Iro184

I can't speak Japanese, and subtitles annoy me. I'm fine with just browsing through the screen shots on Serebii. I haven't actually watched an epsidoe since 2004.
autor: luc66

Man, the Pokemon series with subs would probably be kinda expensive to collect. With multiple tracks needed for raw and dub, even a 5 episode set can be like $30.00.
autor: beki

I'd spend a years worth of netflix rentals to see Japanese episodes w/ English subs. I think it's only considered a dub when it's voiced over in another language.

And really, the only reason you would have to think that that was expensive is because you've been spoiled on the dirt-cheap sets that PUSA and Viz have been putting out.
autor: tomekla

I'd buy them with subtitles.
autor: Siersciuch

i would if i had the money and knew japanese
autor: pysssska

If they had subtitles, yes I would.

Another post for subs.

Media Factory announced that 10 more DP DVDs will be for sale in July. That's 22/80 of DP so far.
autor: iro1958

Not quite. The first batch (the "GET" series) only had eight discs. The upcoming second batch (the "BATTLE" series) will also only have eight discs. That's sixteen.(You're probably thinking about the Kanto and Orange Islands releases, which actually did have ten discs apiece) Then, you have the B Button League episode (packaged in with the third ANA short) and the Beadull episode (packaged in with the fourth ANA short). That brings us up to eighteen. Then we'll have the two part Riolu/Pokemon Ranger episode coming out soon, bringing us to 20 episodes total.
autor: kiciek1.pl

Yeah, forgot DP was only 8 per set.
autor: kicikici1

Probably not many, since I don't tend to buy the dub DVDs either (since I can tape 'em off tv and all), but certainly the movies and specials.
autor: FifokSs

Dude, I'd sooooo would get them if they were available! *__* I need my Rica Matsumoto (Satoshi)!
autor: siersciuch01

They are very expensive, so if they were cheaper I would. I would by the two movie DVD boxes, and hope that it's the original Myuutsuu no Gyakushuu that's never released on DVD before.
autor: luc.pio

It's not. It's the version that has all the extra CGI added to it. The original version of that movie was, to my knowledge, only released on VHS. There's also a Laserdisc release in Japan, but I'm not sure what version of the film is on that.
autor: pysle333

Ok, I thought it was since it said "Theatrical Edition" and the theatrical edition did not have CGI effects, did it? I guess I have to live with the flv format of the movie . . .
autor: adampawlowski

With or without subtitles, I don't care, I'd definitely buy the whole lot.

Like all the others said, I'd buy them if they had subtitles.
autor: olczyd

Agreed with like everyone, I'd buy them if they had subs. I buy enough anime as it is, another series in the mix wouldn't hurt.

I don't think you can rent from overseas. Alternately, look for an import video store in your area and see if *they* have any.
autor: iro12

hey, wait, i have a question. do they even have the option of watching Pokemon in Japanese on the DVDs like other anime does, usually? because by the sound of things, it's not possible.
autor:

Sadly enough, no. ;-;
autor: bekir123456

Would with or without subtitles. But I wouldn't buy dubtitles at all.
autor: Maximus52645

There won't be any dvd's released by an American company containing just the raw japanese episodes. -_-
autor: adampas1

not even the edited ones with the option of the Japanese audio? that's really not fair.
autor: luc27

Most TV-Y7 DVDs only come w/ the English track because, y'know, kids don't like to read when they don't have to. (Not my opinion, but the popular one)
autor: sierscuch01

I would buy them as a collecter's item.
autor: siersciuch01

I'd buy what I could afford. Maybe focus on getting all the episodes from one region, or something like that.
